In recent years the Anglican Church of Canada has deepened its relationships with the Anglican Epsicopal Church of Brazil (IEAB). Through companion diocese relationships, such as between the Diocese of Huron and Amazonia, visits from Brazilian Bishops Francisco DaSilva (former Primate); Saulo Barros and Marinez Bassotto, current Primate, and participation by Canadian Anglicans as partners to the General Synod of the IEAB we have discovered shared mission and ministry, including evangelism, diakonia, and accompaniment with Indigenous peoples and 2SLGBTQ+ communities.
We are deeply saddened to hear the recent news of violence against the democratically elected government of Brazil. Archbishop Marinez Bassotto shared with the Primate:
“We are living through very difficult times in Brazil. We are very apprehensive, because since the results of the [2022] elections, extreme right-wing groups were demonstrating throughout the country, and there were concentrations of people in front of the army barracks begging for military intervention and a coup against democracy. This is surreal.”
The House of Bishops of Brazil has responded with the statement below. Please pray as they have asked, … “for permanent prayer for peace in Brazil, so that love overcomes hatred, dialogue replaces violence and intolerance gives way to respect.”
Pray for the witness of the church and its leaders in the midst of these troubling times.
