The church year revolves around two “cycles”; one centred on Christmas, the feast of the Nativity (birth) of Christ into the world, and one centred on Easter, the death and Resurrection of Christ.
The Christmas cycle begins with a season of preparation: Advent.
The Easter cycle begins with a season of preparation: Lent.
Lent lasts for forty days to recall Christ’s fasting during His period of temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11).
