In the Anglican Church of Canada Cycle of Prayer for the week of 12February 2023 we pray for The Rt Rev Sam Rose, Bishop, and the people and clergy of the Diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador.
The diocese was formed in 1976 from a division of the 1873 Diocese of Newfoundland (diocesan history here), but "the earliest presence of the Anglican Church in Newfoundland and Labrador can be traced to stopovers by various military chaplains and visiting clerics in the 16th and 17th centuries," and the first resident clergyman was appointed in 1701."The Diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador is spread over 38 parishes on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland and throughout most of Labrador." [1] It has been hard hit financially by the 2020 pandemic.
The diocese is situated in the traditional territories of the Beothuk, Mi'kmaq, Innu and Inuit First Nations.
The diocesan cathedral is St John the Baptist in St John's , more photos here (not to be confused with the Roman Catholic Basilica of the same dedication). See and hear more from Bishop Sam Rose and the Cathedral on the Cathedral's YouTube channel and the diocesan Facebook page.
The diocesan newsletter (and blog) for all three sections of the original Diocese of Newfoundland and Labrador is Anglican Life, available at https://anglicanlife.ca/ .
