In the summer of 2018, with financial support from our Diocese of BC Vision Fund, parishioners at St Philip constructed a labyrinth on the south lawn of the church, using a 7-circuit design based on the 11-circuit 13th century labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral. The labyrinth was dedicated in a special service on 24 June 2018.
Labyrinths have been used for at least 5,000 years to support people on their inner journey.
Unlike a maze, which is a puzzle to be solved, a labyrinth is a map to be followed. Our journeys take unexpected twists and turns; but there are no dead ends. If we follow the Voice of Love, we come to the centre where we find our true nature as beings created by Love.
The labyrinth is an invitation
to explore your own spirituality
in your own time and space.
It’s an invitation,
an invitation
To be
To slow down
To follow a path
And to explore the path
To be present.
What we’re trying to do as a little church, St Philip, is to lower the barrier between inside the building and outside the building, and so it’s just an open invitation for anyone to explore whatever they want to explore. We just encourage people to explore their spirituality.
Below is a short video about the invitation of, and to, the labyrinth, made during construction:
